Off his new single radio premiere tour itinerary, Knii Lante made a late morning stop at Radio Gold 90.5 for a little bit to a 25 minute long interview session on Okyeame Badwenba’s “Home Touch” show --- a warmly entertaining interview that was more like a mini live on-air gig, as Knii Lante did an acoustic rendition of his new record [“You”] together with Feli Nuna, the female voice on the song.
“You”, Knii Lante’s latest work, which features Feli Nuna, is not reggae [the genre his brand is popularly identified with]. “You” is rather a straight Afro Pop record, this got Okyeame Badwenba so curious to ask why the genre switch this time? There came in the revelation how and why “You” had not been a reggae record. Knii revealed that he basically did the song out of inspiration with Sydric his guitarist one late night after a rehearsal with his band, and as the original inspiration from which they got the song wasn’t reggae-induced, he decided to maintain it as such just so he could have a different new taste for his fans and possibly reach out to Afro pop lovers too.
On the explanation about his flirting with a different beat other than a reggae riddim for “You”, Knii Lante elaborated a bit further that most modern music producers are more bent on rhythm diversity lately that they sometimes fuse pieces of multiple genres into one beat --- hence we have hybrid genres these days. “As an artiste, you may meet a beat which is a collect-build of reggae, dubstep, jungle, r&b, hip hop and other genre flavours and you still will feel the burning urge to jump on it when the right inspiration hits you”, Knii related and cited Stephen Marley as doing collabs with hip hop and non-reggae artistes even though those songs are not of a core reggae ensemble.
Asked how he got Feli Nuna for collaboration on “You” --- “I first saw her on 4syte TV and I felt the need to have her on one of my projects, because she was impressive in her video”. Knii Lante replied smiling. Fortunately for him, he and Feli share a mutual producer [Genius Selection], so connecting with Feli was easier. Riddim Boss called Feli Nuna over during the recording session of “You”, she came in to listen to the melody, work then started, she did the magic and voila --- “You” was born right that day.
According to Knii Lante, he had initially wanted a duet with a francophone artiste when he was building the melody for “You”, and being so fortunate destiny did the connecting, it brought him Feli Nuna --- a close francophone alternative. Feli is from the Volta Region and she shares a border with Togo where French is the official national language, so she kinda has that francophone vocal flair.…….though hers is slight yet she met Knii’s expectation.
“I really like her voice so much”, Knii Lante admired looking Feli Nuna in the eye while talking to Okyeame Badwenba. Feli smiled backed and made a quick confession, saying: “I love love, and I was so happy doing a love song with Knii Lante, a multiple award winner”.
“You” will be released very soon on soundcloud, youtube and other social media platforms. Also on several entertainment blogs.
Quick on gig updates, Knii Lante told his fans to lock out 14th July on their calendar. He would be performing in support for Palestine at the “African Voices for Palestine” concert inside the National Theatre [Accra] alongside Stonebwoy, Fancy Gadam, Ambulley, Amandzeba, Kojo Kombolo, Iwan, Osagyefo and several other artistes. Also on his gig log is his own pending reggae concert at +233 in August with his Big Hills Band.
Knii Lante’s EP will be out, latest by October and album in December, He informed.
He ended the interview with the announcement of the “You” video shoot which comes off tomorrow.
